The Rugby Flyer 25

An event for road bikes to celebrate the achievement of Ralph Dougherty.

On Sunday 17th September 2023 at 09.00

This is a Cycling Time Trials Type 'B' (Club event) promoted for and on behalf of Cycling Time Trials under their Rules and Regulations

Course: K10/25B. Signing-on will be at the top of Princethorpe Hill on the B4453.

Private entries welcome (entry fee £5). Pay on the day, and normal entry fee arrangements apply to Rugby RCC members.

Definition of a 'Road Bike'
The event is for standard road bikes and riders wearing normal road riding gear. Skinsuits & shoe covers accepted.
1. No Tri-bars, aerobars, clip on aerobars or aero extensions to be used.
2. Hands must be holding the handlebars at all times whilst racing (ie. not with forearms resting on the handlebar).
3. Wheels must have a minimum of 12 spokes each, and have a maximum rim depth of 90 mm.
4. Helmets to have no visor. Ears must not be covered by the helmet (Giro Aerohead helmets are not permitted)

Awards: Winner to be presented with the 'Rugby Flyer Trophy' (for one year)
A medal (to keep) awarded to any rider on a road bike finishing with a sub-one hour time.

Who was Ralph Dougherty?
Ralph Dougherty (1913-1990) joined Rugby Racing Cycling Club in the early 1930's and was known as 'The Rugby Flyer'. In 1939 he became the first 25 miles record holder to finish under the hour when he won the Solihull CC 25 mile time trial in 59 mins 29 seconds. To see photos and more info go to Rugby Flyer.
